The alleged incident took place during Fenerbahce’s 2-1 defeat to the Ukrainian side in a Champions League qualifier played at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul.

The result saw Fenerbahce exit Europe’s premier cup competition early with Dynamo securing a late victory on the road with a goal from defender Oleksandr Karavaev deep into extra time.

However, a night that should have been remembered for the drama on the pitch was seemingly overshadowed by events off it.

In a video posted to Twitter by Deutshe Welle journalist Batu Bozkürk, which was subsequently reposted by Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson, a significant number of the home supporters can be heard chanting Putin’s name.

At the time of writing, Bozkürk’s video had been viewed 5.6 million times.

According to CBS soccer correspondent Nico Cantor, the chanting was in response to Vitalii Buyalskyi’s opening goal for Dynamo on 57 minutes, which put Fenerbahce on course for defeat.

Cantor wrote that Buyalskiy “celebrated by doing an eagle hand gesture, a clear nod to Fenerbahçe arch-rival Beşiktaş” who are also based in Istanbul.

Though Fenerbahce went on to tie the game in the 88th minute, Karavaev’s extra-time goal condemned them to defeat and a season without football in the lucrative Champions League.

Despite acknowledging this “provocative” act, Cantor branded the response of Fenerbahce fans “completely inappropriate and frankly cheap.”

He was not alone in his condemnation of their actions.

Ukrainian investigative journalist Danylo Mokryk was similarly scathing of the fans’ response branding it “sickeningly disgusting” and accusing fans of “treading on a tragedy purely out of spite.”

He added: “Just as Fener lost today, Putin will also lose.”

Piers Morgan also spoke out against the reaction of the Fenerbahce support. “So disgusting,” he wrote. “But Dynamo won.. making Fenerbahçe double losers.”

The response was similarly vociferous among fans on social media, with some even calling for Fenerbahce to face some form of formal punishment over the incident.

One fan posting as Viktor Maudr branded the actions “absolutely disgusting” while tagging both Fenerbahce and UEFA in the post and calling on the authorities to close the team’s stadium to fans “for a loooong time!”

Another, writing as dykitantsi commented: “Please ban Fenerbahçe from all your events. This is disgusting, pathetic and infuriating.”

A third, posting as Goldlio47799941, urged European football’s governing body, UEFA to “punish them heavily” with a stadium ban for “5 years.”

Several fans of the Turkish club also spoke out against the actions witnessed in the video.

They included Titus Pullo, who tweeted out the video, writing: “I am a Fenerbahce fan but UEFA should ban us from European competitions.”

UEFA has confirmed that a disciplinary investigation has been launched into the incident.

An official statement on the UEFA website reads: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding alleged misbehavior of Fenerbahçe supporters.”

“Information on this matter will be made available in due course.”

Newsweek has reached out to Fenerbahce.
