On January 17th, StreamerBans posted that Jaycgee had been banned from Twitch in the middle of her subathon. The streamer also acknowledged the ban in a tweet, but didn’t give an explanation as to what happened despite fans asking online. Over on the LivestreamFail subreddit, viewers who tuned in to Jaycgee’s recent streams speculated that it was because she was playing movies while sleeping. Twitch has a strict policy about streaming copyrighted movies and shows on the platform, and streamers who break this rule can receive copyright strikes and risk getting banned. However, there are still some who manage to skirt around this rule to stream reality shows and anime on the platform. Although this could be a plausible reason for Jaycgee’s ban, this has yet to be confirmed by the streamer herself and Twitch.
Apart from Twitch viewers wondering why Jaycgee was banned, some criticized her subathon, calling it low-effort and accusing her of “milking money from viewers.” They were also comparing Jaycgee’s subathon to other streamers that they deemed more interesting, naming the likes of Buddha, Nidas, and WiseGuy.
Days-long subathons have been around since around 2015 when Albert “Boxbox” Zheng hosted the very first one using a bot he created that increased a timer when a viewer would subscribe and donate. These days, this streaming events would often be done to celebrate a streamer’s Twitch anniversary or if they’re doing a fundraiser. One of the recent subathons that caught viewers and streamers’ attention was Ludwig Ahgren’s 31-day Twitch stream in March 2021, where he shared his daily life and did fun activities to keep his viewers entertained until the marathon came to an end.
With Jaycgee’s subathon cut short because of her Twitch ban and viewers sharing their negative thoughts on it, there’s no knowing whether she restarts the timer once she gets her account back. There’s no knowing how long this ban might take, so her fans will need to wait patiently for her return.
