The past year has been challenging for Twitch, which has continued to see popular and talented streamers transition to YouTube. Despite these exclusive contracts poaching content creators, many believe the streaming platform has engaged in a continuous series of missteps such as taking too much time to deal with the phenomenon of “hate raids” or regulate gambling. Even when Twitch did ban gambling, a policy change that was greatly appreciated by vast swathes of both viewers and streamers, virtually all goodwill garnered was cast aside within the next few days. It was announced that the premium 70/30 revenue split would be removed, making all contracts offer 50/50 instead, eliminating an incentive for creators to gain prominence on the platform. More recently, Twitch’s ad incentive program has received backlash from streamers who believe that it effectively forces them into killing their channels with too many advertisements.

An article from Twitch outlines that “starting in December 2022, we’re experimenting with an update to Stream Display Ads (SDAs),” citing their disruptive nature. Presently, viewers will typically have to sit through up to two ads before the stream they wish to watch is freely available, and even then a significant ad break is virtually guaranteed within the next hour.

Twitch’s recent viewer attrition has been attributed to the overbearing nature of ads, which can kill any interest a user previously held.

SDAs are intended as a more convenient option, given that they still allow viewers to “see and hear creators” while being displayed. Their current implementation slightly shrinks the screen size of the stream to make space for a banner that, on desktops, is placed below. Twitch hopes to change the system so that no size disparity is required, but SDAs are already an immense improvement relative to the prior video ads which would essentially pause the stream for several minutes. However, those excited about the upcoming Mario movie may wish to be distracted by ads as some were showcasing more of Chris Pratt’s divisive interpretation of the beloved character.
